You should live here if want to live close to downtown in a top hipster neighborhood – urban redevelopment at its finest. You like funkiness and old houses, though you also might like new ones at the Mueller Development.
This area has experienced tremendous growth and gentrification in the past 15 years. E. 6th St has turned from being a place you might avoid walking around at night to our most vibrant nightlife area in the time that I’ve lived here. Anyone who is familiar with Brooklyn, Silverlake, Portland or the Mission will feel at home amongst the bearded, bespoke bikers and tattooed, pierced ladies. Living near this area comes at a premium price.
The further north & east you go on the east side, the more family friendly and quieter streets become. More affordable housing can be found near Highway 183 to the north and east, along with more ethnically diverse neighborhoods.
Mueller is a newer development near Airport Blvd and 51st which is at Austin’s old airport location. Here you’ll find a planned community with a range of house sizes. More and more amenities are opening up around the area, including a grocery store (previously lacking on the eastside), a lovely park, farmers market, movie theatre and children’s museum.
I personally love the Cherrywood area. You’ll find homes from the 1950s, winding roads and large trees.
You can find schools here that are performing well on state tests and maintain diverse student populations. There are quite a few charter schools (like Austin Discovery School) and magnet schools as well. The area’s Kealing Middle School and LASA High School have fabulous magnet programs that attract students throughout the city. LASA is one of the nation’s top performing schools, and it’s quite competitive to get into the program.
